ICELAND IN 11 DAYS
Day 1
Our group tour starts in Reykjavik. Tour members would be arriving at different times. Some may be jet lagged while others, not. Those who arrive early enough and have some energy could join our Read morewalking tour of the capital. Although most of its attractions are low-key, some are definitely worth a visit, such as the Hallgrímskirkja Church. Other than this Lutheran church, perhaps Reykjavik’s greatest draw is its nightlife.
Day 2
Today we should be making a daytrip via a 45-minute drive to the Reykjanes Peninsula.
This peninsula is marked by active volcanism under its surface and large lava fields, allowing for little vegetation. There are numerous Read morehot springs and sulphur springs in the southern half of the peninsula, specifically around Kleifarvatn Lake and a geothermal area known as Krýsuvík. There is also a luxury spa and pool area known as the Blue Lagoon. It is one of Iceland’s most famous attractions and a great place to go bathing. Make sure to bring your swimming attire.
Day 3
Today we should be making a daytrip around what is known as the Golden Circle.
We should be starting off our morning at the Gullfoss Waterfall, which is less than a 2-hour drive away from Reykjavik. Next, we should be Read moretaking a 15-minute drive to the geysers of Geysir and Strokkur. Lastly, from Geysir, we should be taking a 1-hour drive to Þingvellir National Park (a.k.a. Thingvellir National Park). Its waterfalls and canyons are quite impressive. Whatever time we have left today should be spent exploring Reykjavik.
Day 4
Today we should be relocating to the Thórsmörk (a.k.a. Þórsmörk) Mountain Ridge. We start our day around 5:00am, as there are two stops en route.
Firstly, we should be Read moredriving to Landeyjahofn. This is a harbor from where we should take a 35-minute ferry ride to Heimaey Island. We should spend around four hours there. We would then return to Landeyjahofn and then take a 15-minute drive to Seljalandsfoss Waterfall. The drive from Seljalandsfoss to Thórsmörk takes about one hour. We should be lodging somewhere in the Husadalur valley.
Day 5
As a daytrip, we should be spending the day hiking around Thórsmörk, reaching the Stakkholtsgjá canyon and Read moreits waterfall.
There are several hiking routes to choose from. We have chosen the route from Skógar, which is particularly beautiful, as numerous waterfalls are discovered along the way. The hike between Skógar and Thórsmörk takes the average group around six hours.
Day 6
Today we should be relocating to the small village of Vík. En route, we should be making a stop at the Skogafoss Waterfall, which Read moreis about a 1.5-hour drive away from Thórsmörk. Getting to Vik from Skogafoss takes about 30 minutes. After checking into our hotel and getting settled it, we would be taking a 20-minute drive to Reynisfjara Beach. This is where we should spend most of our day, riding a quad (a.k.a. ATV) to explore the area as well as seeing wreckage of a crashed U.S. Navy aircraft abandoned decades ago.
Day 7
Today we should be relocating to Jökulsárlón Lake. En route, we should be making a stop in a certain area of the large Vatnajökull National Park. More specifically, we should first be going on Read morean organized tour of the Ice Cave glacier. It is about a two-hour drive away from Vik. Afterwards, we should be driving to the very nearby Svartifoss Waterfall. The drive from Svartifoss to Jökulsárlón takes about 45 minutes.
We would need special gear for walking on the glacier. The ice cave and Svartifoss are located in the same area, in a preservation area called Skaftafell. The hike to Svartifoss starts from the visitor center. It is 1.5 kilometers (0.93 miles) uphill. On the way to Svartifoss, we should pass three other waterfalls: Þjófafoss (a.k.a. Thieves Fall), Hundafoss (a.k.a. Dogs Fall) and Magnúsarfoss (a.k.a. The Falls of Magnús). As for Jökulsárlón Lake, we should be spending 1 hour walking around and photographing and another hour going on a boat tour. We should be sleeping in the village of Höfn.
Day 8
Much of today involves driving. We should be relocating to Myvatn Lake, which is a 6.5-hour drive away from Jökulsárlón. We need to leave Jokulsaron at dawn, so we can spend as much time as possible enjoying Myvatn. There we can find Read morespa baths (somewhat similar to the Blue Lagoon located in the Reykjanes Peninsula), interesting old buildings, a geothermal hot spring area, and many beautiful hiking trails around craters and lava fields.
Day 9
Today we should be making a daytrip northwards. Firstly, we should be taking an early-morning, 45-minute drive to the village of Husavik, from where we can go whale-watching. The next destination should be Asbyrgi Canyon, which Read moreis about a one-hour drive away from Husavik. We should be spending around 2.5 hours exploring this canyon. The last destination for today should be Dettifoss Waterfall, which is a 45-minute drive away from Asbyrgi. It takes about 1.5 hours to get back to Myvatn from Dettifoss.
Day 10
Today we should be making a daytrip via a 3.5-hour drive along F-road 905 or 910 to reach the Askja Caldera. Since we plan to drive all the way up to the crater, it should take only around 30 minutes to hike up to the top. Note that this caldera is open only during the summertime.
Day 11
Myvatn Lake is the final destination on our group tour of Iceland. From here, we should be taking an early-morning, 6-hour drive back to the capital, from where you could fly out.
