Day 1: Whale Watching & Checking Out the Northern Lights
Our tour starts in Iceland's second most visited city, Akureyri. Get ready to go on a whale watching tour. From October to early March, also included is a night tour to an area where we see the northern lights.
Day 2: Hiking a Caldera & Bathing in a Crater OR Snowmobiling & Dog Sledding
Today’s daytrip destination(s) and activities depend on the season you are visiting. From June 15 through the end of October, we first hike Askja Caldera and then visit a crater called Viti, the latter of which offers a pond where we go bathing. From December 1 to April 15, we take a 1-hour drive from Akureyri to the Lake Mývatn area. There we go both snowmobiling and dogsledding. Per your request, we can switch snowmobiling and dogsledding with ice fishing, usually on Lake Kringluvatn or Lake Langavatn.
Day 3: A Lake Created by Large Basaltic Lava, a Geothermal Area & Powerful Waterfalls
As a daytrip from Akureyri, we are taken on a tour to Goðafoss Waterfall, Lake Mývatn, a geothermal area called Hverir and Dettifoss Waterfall. Goðafoss waterfall has a height of 12 meters over a width of 30 meters. Lake Mývatn was created by a large basaltic lava which erupted 2,300 years ago. The surrounding landscape is dominated by volcanic landforms, including lava pillars. Dettifoss is reputed to be the second most powerful waterfall in Europe.
Day 4: The "Golden Circle," Featuring a Geyser, Waterfall & National Park
We relocate from Akureyri to Reykjavík and soon thereafter start touring the so-called ‘Golden Circle’. Destinations for today include Gullfoss Waterfall, Geysir/Strokkur geyser and Þingvellir National Park (a.k.a. Thingvellir National Park). Gullfoss is 32 meters tall and features not 1 but 2 drops. Geysir’s eruptions can hurl boiling water up to 70 meters in the air. Þingvellir is notable for its unusual tectonic and volcanic environment in a rift valley.
*On your free time, we recommend you visit Reykjavík’s architecturally impressive Hallgrimskirkja Church. The views from atop the tower are great. The hours of operation are 9:00am to 5:00pm October through April and 9:00am to 9:00pm May through September. The church tower closes half an hour before the general closing time. It is also closed on Sundays during mass.
Day 5: 1 of the 10 Most Beautiful Beaches on Earth & More Waterfalls
We leave Reykjavík and start the journey along the southeast coast. Highlights for today include Seljalandsfoss Waterfall, Skógafoss Waterfall and the Reynisfjara Black Sand Beach. We end up lodging in the Skaftafell area. The Seljalandsfoss Waterfall drops 60 meters. Visitors can walk behind the falls into a fascinating cave. Skógafoss is one of the biggest waterfalls in the country, with a width of 25 meters and a drop of 60 meters. Reynisfjara was ranked by National Geographic as one of the ten most beautiful non-tropical beaches on Earth.
Day 6: Huge Icebergs, Exploring an Ice Cave, a Surreal Looking Waterfall & a Diamond Beach
Today we head back to Reykjavík. Destinations to be visited en route include Skaftafell Nature Reserve, Jökulsárlón Glacial Lake, the natural ice cave at Vatnajökull National Park and Diamond Beach. Skaftafell’s landscape is similar to some of the Alps. The difference is Skaftafell has been formed over thousands of years by different influences of fire and water. Jökulsárlón Lake provides outstanding views of icebergs which rise to a height of 910 meters. Jökulsárlón has been a setting for four Hollywood movies: (1) A View to a Kill, (2) Die Another Day, (3) Lara Croft: Tomb Raider and (4) Batman Begins. Vatnajökull’s ice cave contains canals for water which run through or at the bottom of the glacier. Diamond Beach features icebergs which float onto the shore from Jökulsárlón.
*Note that the surreal looking Svartifoss Waterfall is sometimes-but not always-included on today’s tour. It depends on many factors, including the weather. Also, note that the ice cave is not open June through September. It is open only during the winter season.
Day 7: Bathing Inside a Geothermal Spa & Mud Pools, Hot Springs & Craters
From Reykjavík, we make a daytrip to the Reykjanes Peninsula: Lake Kleifarvatn, a geothermal area called Krýsuvík, Gunnuhver’s mud pools and hot springs and the Blue Lagoon. Krýsuvík consists of several geothermal fields. Here solfataras, fumaroles, mud pots and hot springs have formed. The soil is colored bright yellow, red and green. Nearby are several craters which were created by the explosions of overheated groundwater. The Blue Lagoon, one of the most visited attractions in Iceland, is a geothermal spa. There we enjoy bathing inside the warm water.
Day 8: Hiking a Valley Characterized by Volcanoes, Canyons, a Glacier, a Crater & a Waterfall
From Reykjavík, we make another daytrip today. From April through October, we are provided with two options for hiking around Thorsmork Valley. The first option is a 14-hour tour which is even prettier than the standard tour. Nonetheless, it is recommended only for those who are physically fit. Highlights include a volcano called Fimmvorduhals, another volcano called Eyjafjallajokull, a waterfall called Seljalandsfoss, a glacier called Gígjökull, a crater called Magni and another crater called Modi. The other tour option is offered year-around and is meant for just about anyone who has good enough health. The destination is still Thorsmork Valley. The highlights for this tour, however, differ a bit from the more physically fit, 14-hour tour. The highlights are Seljalandsfoss Waterfall, Stakkholtsgjá Canyon, Nauthúsagil Canyon and Gígjökull Glacier.
Day 9: Our Tour Ends Today
Reykjavík is the final destination on our tour around Iceland. Transportation will be arranged for you to reach the airport.
This trip to Iceland perfectly captured all the natural wonders of the country. I am so glad I went with CharlieTheTraveler, as they were organized and planned a variety of activities for this trip. I appreciated that the company focused the trip on all the natural beauty of the country.
I went with CharlieTheTraveler for my Iceland trip because of how many activities they had planned. It would have taken me months to do all that planning and organizing for my brother and me. I was pleased with the company’s organization and price, as there was a lot fit into this 11-day trip.
I knew Iceland was beautiful, but pictures online do not do it justice. This is one place I needed to experience in order to understand its beauty. My trip that was booked through CharlieTheTraveler included first class accommodations that were ideal for this vacation.
Most people might think Iceland and think cold, frozen tundra. However, it is the opposite of what this country’s natural environment is like. I enjoyed seeing everything from waterfalls to geysers on this trip. CharlieTheTraveler did an excellent job planning all of the sites.
CharlieTheTraveler did the impossible for me—convinced a cold climate country was the ideal vacation destination. I would have never thought I would go there for a getaway, but Iceland seemed to offer so much to me. All of this was highlighted in the itinerary and all the positive reviews for this trip were the deciding factor.
I did not know much about Iceland before booking this trip. However, the itinerary was very detailed and I felt comfortable booking since it was through a reputable company. I do not regret my decision, as this was one of the best vacations I’ve been on. Due to the tour guide that CharlieTheTraveler provided was well-versed in the country, I easily felt immersed in the culture of the country.
This tour has something for everyone. I convinced my siblings to come on this Iceland trip with me and I was glad to see each of them had a great time, although their interests vary. CharlieTheTraveler created a very organized and thought-out plan for this trip!
I didn’t think Iceland was the ideal vacation spot. However, I read what this trip through CharlieTheTraveler included. After reading all the good reviews about their trips, I booked online. It was simple and the company kept in contact with me up until I arrived for the trip. From there, the company-provided tour guide took over and made Iceland the most ideal place for me to be.
My fear of booking through a company like this was that I would just be a number in a large group of tourists. However, this is far from the reality. CharlieTheTraveler made me feel like I took precedence over anything else. The first class accommodations in Iceland made it evident the company actually cared about my comfort, safety, and enjoyment. I could not have asked for a better vacation!
I never thought there was much in Iceland to visit. As I did research and found CharlieTheTraveler had a whole sightseeing trip planned out for this destination, I was instantly intrigued. I felt safe booking with them due to the overall good reviews online. There were so many sites to see in Iceland that this trip definitely changed my mind on this country.
After having the same kind of vacations year after year, I wanted a unique vacation. I booked the Iceland trip through CharlieTheTraveler and was not disappointed. There were so many amazing sights and natural landscapes that I wasn’t only able to see but be a part of. This was a one-of-a-kind trip that I would have never been able to plan on my own.
I like vacations with a lot of activity, so when I came across the Iceland trip offered by CharlieTheTraveler, I knew it would be perfect. There was so much to do in the 11-day trip and for such a good price. This is such a beautiful country and I am happy I got the opportunity to experience it.
I appreciated that the tour guide provided by CharlieTheTraveler knew about the areas we were visiting in Iceland. This made me be able to understand the country and the culture more. It was a total immersion and I had so much fun.
I cannot believe it took me this long to book a trip to Iceland. I booked it through CharlieTheTraveler due to their positive reviews and their detailed itinerary. I had no idea this country offered so many amazing sites to visit and I could do as many activities as the company planned. This is definitely not my last trip through them!
Iceland is a unique destination for a vacation, but if anything, it is a hidden gem. It isn’t too infiltrated with tourism so much of the authentic culture stands out. This was all highlighted in my trip through CharlieTheTraveler.
I wanted a romantic getaway with my partner. However, I wanted it to be a unique and unforgettable experience. I chose to go with the Iceland trip with CharlieTheTraveler because it seemed to be just that. I loved that the tour guide provided by the company gave us our space to explore on our own but also amplified the uniqueness of the trip by giving essential information on the natural landscapes and the culture of the country. This was definitely an unforgettable trip for me!
Booking a tour with CharlieTheTraveler was very easy. My trip to Iceland went off without any issues and that’s all to the company’s organization. The tour guide they provided was welcoming and made me feel safe throughout the trip.
The trip to Iceland through CharlieTheTraveler was filled with activities. I enjoyed every second of this trip. The company made every part of the trip painless and ensured they provided the best accommodations.
When I went on the Iceland trip from CharlieTheTraveler, I didn’t want to leave. The beauty of the natural landscapes was highlighted in this tour, most of which I didn’t even realize were in the country. Our tour guide was great in knowing when to let me explore and when to stay for support and explanations of the sites.
CharlieTheTraveler planned the perfect trip to Iceland. I was comfortable booking without doubting the company due to the many positive reviews. I enjoyed my trip and wouldn’t have changed a thing!

Can I Opt-Out of Certain Activities?
